About Lake Hartwell
Lake Hartwell is a 56,000-acre Army Corps reservoir on the Georgia-South Carolina border, formed by the damming of the Savannah, Tugaloo, and Seneca Rivers. With 962 miles of shoreline and depths reaching 165 feet, the lake is one of the largest and most popular fishing destinations in the Southeast. The Georgia side features deep creek channels, rocky points, and red clay banks that support excellent spotted and largemouth bass fishing.
Striped bass provide world-class fishing in the lake's deep, clear water, with fish regularly exceeding 30 pounds. Crappie fishing is outstanding in the upper reaches of the lake's many long creek arms, where standing timber and brush piles concentrate fish during spring. The lake's healthy baitfish population โ primarily threadfin and gizzard shad โ fuels consistent growth across all predator species.
Hartwell, the lake's namesake city, provides marinas, tackle shops, and guide services on the Georgia side. Lavonia and Royston offer additional access points and lodging. The lake's extensive Army Corps parklands include numerous free public boat ramps, making access easy and affordable for visiting anglers.
