Forbes Lake is a 585-acre state-managed lake in Mason County, part of the Stephen A. Forbes State Recreation Area. Despite its modest size, the lake offers quality fishing for largemouth bass and panfish, benefiting from active habitat management by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The lake's timber-lined coves and managed brush piles concentrate fish and make locating them straightforward.

Redear sunfish are a standout species here, with Forbes Lake producing some of the best redear fishing in central Illinois. Big bluegill and quality crappie add to the panfish opportunities, while largemouth bass in the 3- to 5-pound range are caught regularly by anglers working the shoreline cover. Channel catfish provide additional variety for anglers soaking cut bait on the bottom.

The state recreation area surrounding the lake offers camping, hiking, and picnicking facilities. The small-lake atmosphere and quiet surroundings make Forbes a relaxing alternative to the larger, more crowded reservoirs in the region.
