The Illinois River is one of the most important waterways in the Midwest, flowing 273 miles through the heart of central Illinois from its origin near Peru to its confluence with the Mississippi River near Grafton. The river passes through the scenic Starved Rock area, the Peoria Lakes reach, and a vast floodplain of backwater lakes and wetlands that provide outstanding fishing habitat for a wide range of species.

The backwater lakes along the Illinois River, including Chautauqua National Wildlife Refuge and the Anderson Lake complex, hold tremendous populations of largemouth bass, crappie, and bluegill. Spring flooding connects these backwaters to the main river, allowing fish to move between habitats and supporting naturally reproducing populations. Flathead catfish exceeding 50 pounds are caught from the deeper holes, and sauger fishing below the dams at Peoria and Starved Rock is popular during fall and winter.

The river is fully navigable with commercial barge traffic, so anglers must exercise caution and understand navigation rules. Numerous public ramps are available from Peru to Beardstown, and the Peoria area offers the greatest concentration of marinas and launch facilities. The Illinois River valley's rich natural heritage and productive fishery make it a cornerstone of the state's angling tradition.
