About Lake Mattoon

Lake Mattoon is an 891-acre reservoir in Coles County that serves as the water supply for the city of Mattoon. The lake has benefited from active fisheries management including walleye stocking, giving it a species diversity uncommon in lakes this size in east-central Illinois. Submerged timber, old roadbeds, and brush piles provide ample fish-holding structure throughout the basin.

Largemouth bass and crappie are the most popular targets, with good catches reported around the timbered coves and along riprap banks. The walleye fishery adds an exciting dimension, with fish caught trolling crankbaits over the old creek channel and near the dam. Channel catfish grow to respectable sizes in the fertile water and provide reliable action for bait anglers.

The lake offers public ramps and a marina with boat rental, making it accessible to anglers without their own watercraft. The surrounding park area includes picnic shelters and walking trails, and Mattoon's amenities are a short drive from the water.
