About Lake Pepin
Lake Pepin is a natural widening of the Mississippi River, stretching approximately 22 miles through the scenic bluff country of southeastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin. This 29,400-acre lake sits in Wabasha and Goodhue counties and offers a unique river-lake fishing experience with excellent populations of walleye, sauger, smallmouth bass, and channel catfish. The lake is also credited as the birthplace of waterskiing, invented here in 1922.
Walleye and sauger fishing is outstanding on Lake Pepin, particularly during spring and fall when fish concentrate near current breaks and wing dams. Smallmouth bass thrive along the rocky shorelines and bluff bases, while largemouth bass hold in the quieter backwater areas. Channel catfish and freshwater drum provide additional action, especially during the warm summer months.
Lake City, on the Minnesota shore, is the primary fishing hub with excellent boat launches, marinas, and services. Red Wing and Wabasha offer additional access and amenities. The lake's dramatic bluff scenery makes it one of the most beautiful fishing destinations in the Upper Midwest, and the Great River Road provides stunning views along both shorelines.
