Lake Erie's New York shoreline stretches 75 miles along the state's western edge, providing access to one of the most productive walleye fisheries in the world. While New York holds only a fraction of Lake Erie's total shoreline, its waters are among the most fertile, with the shallow eastern basin supporting enormous populations of walleye, perch, and bass. The lake's maximum depth of 210 feet in this region and abundant forage create ideal conditions for trophy-caliber fish.

Walleye fishing is the primary draw, with spring and fall producing outstanding catches of fish in the 3- to 10-pound range. The evening and night bite during summer can be exceptional, with walleye feeding aggressively on schools of emerald shiners and other baitfish. Smallmouth bass fishing has exploded in recent years, with the clear eastern basin producing some of the largest bronzebacks in the Great Lakes. Yellow perch provide family-friendly action and are prized for their delicious fillets. Steelhead trout run the tributaries, including Cattaraugus Creek and other streams, from fall through spring.

Buffalo, New York's second largest city, anchors the eastern end of the lake and offers excellent urban fishing opportunities along its waterfront. The smaller communities of Dunkirk, Barcelona, and Hamburg provide additional access points and a more relaxed atmosphere. Barcelona Harbor is particularly popular with walleye anglers, while Dunkirk Harbor offers easy access to productive waters along the Chautauqua County shoreline.
