Lake Murray is a 50,000-acre reservoir just west of Columbia that serves as the capital city's premier recreational fishing destination. The lake is one of South Carolina's top largemouth bass fisheries, regularly hosting major tournament circuits that showcase its ability to produce five-fish limits exceeding 25 pounds. Striped bass fishing is equally impressive, with landlocked stripers chasing schools of herring and gizzard shad across the lake's open water, particularly during the fall and winter months.

Lake Murray's 650 miles of shoreline feature numerous public boat ramps managed by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, along with full-service marinas and waterfront restaurants. Crappie fishing is outstanding during the spring spawn when fish move into the shallow coves and around standing timber. The dam, one of the largest earthen dams in the world when completed in 1930, creates dramatic deep-water habitat on its upstream face. The lake's proximity to Columbia and its position along Interstate 26 make it one of the most accessible fishing destinations in the Midlands.
