About Pactola Reservoir

Pactola Reservoir is an 800-acre mountain lake in the heart of the Black Hills, serving as the premier cold-water fishery in western South Dakota. The reservoir's deep, clear waters support all three major trout species, with lake trout inhabiting the deepest basins, brown trout cruising the rocky shorelines, and rainbow trout stocked regularly to provide consistent action. The lake's maximum depth of 150 feet creates cold-water habitat that is rare in the Great Plains region.

Pactola is located along the scenic Peter Norbeck Byway between Rapid City and Hill City, with a public boat ramp and marina providing convenient access. Smallmouth bass have established a growing population in the warmer, shallower sections of the reservoir and provide exciting light-tackle fishing during summer. Yellow perch round out the fishery and are popular with ice anglers during winter months. The surrounding Black Hills National Forest provides a stunning backdrop of granite outcrops and pine forests, making Pactola one of the most scenic fishing destinations in the Dakotas.
