Lake Chelan is the third deepest lake in the United States, plunging to an astounding 1,486 feet in its glacially carved basin in the heart of the North Cascades. This 55-mile-long fjord-like lake stretches from the sun-drenched orchards and vineyards near the town of Chelan into the rugged wilderness of the Lake Chelan-Sawtooth Wilderness Area, where the remote village of Stehekin can only be reached by boat, float plane, or trail. With 32,600 acres of crystal-clear water and 82 miles of shoreline, Lake Chelan is one of Washington's most iconic natural landmarks.

Kokanee Salmon are the bread-and-butter fishery on Lake Chelan, with strong runs providing fast action for trollers from late spring through fall. Lake Trout inhabit the deep, cold waters and can reach impressive sizes, with fish exceeding 20 pounds taken regularly by anglers using downriggers and deep-trolling techniques. Rainbow Trout and landlocked Chinook Salmon add to the coldwater fishing opportunities, while Smallmouth Bass provide excellent warm-water action in the shallower bays near Chelan and Manson. Burbot, an unusual freshwater cod, are targeted through the ice in winter.

The communities of Chelan and Manson at the lake's southeastern end offer multiple boat launches, marinas, and full visitor services including lodging, restaurants, and tackle shops. The lake's dramatic depth and clear water create unique fishing challenges, but the reward is a day on one of the most visually spectacular lakes in North America, surrounded by towering peaks, alpine forests, and a wilderness that has changed little in centuries.
