Pamlico Sound is the largest lagoon on the East Coast of the United States, stretching over 80 miles long and up to 30 miles wide behind North Carolina's famous Outer Banks barrier islands. Flounder fishing is productive along the sandy bottoms and channel drops, while bluefish, striped bass, and cobia offer seasonal excitement. Access to Pamlico Sound is available from numerous small fishing villages along the mainland shore and from Outer Banks communities including Hatteras Village and Ocracoke. Charter fishing guides specialize in poling the shallow flats and targeting trophy red drum. The NC Ferry System provides vehicle access to Ocracoke Island, and multiple boat ramps serve the mainland side. The sound is also world-famous for kiteboarding and windsurfing due to its consistent winds and shallow, warm water.
