About Pymatuning Lake

Pymatuning Lake is a 14,650-acre reservoir straddling the Ohio-Pennsylvania border in Ashtabula County, making it one of the largest lakes in the region. The shallow, fertile water produces outstanding walleye and musky fishing, and the lake has been a destination for northeast Ohio anglers for generations. The Pymatuning spillway, where fish congregate so densely that ducks walk on them, is one of Ohio's most unique natural attractions.

Walleye are the primary draw, with excellent catches reported from spring through fall using jigs, worm harnesses, and trolling crankbaits. The musky fishery is well-established, with fish over 40 inches caught each season by anglers casting large baits along weed edges and rocky points. Crappie and yellow perch provide reliable panfish action, especially around the abundant submerged timber in the upper lake.

Pymatuning State Park on the Ohio side offers well-maintained launch ramps, camping, and cabin rentals. The lake's broad, shallow basin means it can get rough in high winds, but on calm days it provides some of the best multi-species fishing in northeast Ohio. The shared jurisdiction with Pennsylvania means anglers need to be aware of state boundary regulations.
