About Potholes Reservoir
Potholes Reservoir is a 28,200-acre impoundment in the heart of Washington's Columbia Basin, created where irrigation wastewater from the Columbia Basin Project collects in a vast network of sand dunes, lava flows, and natural depressions. Located in Grant and Adams counties with 100 miles of shoreline, the reservoir is famous for its unique "sand dunes" area โ a labyrinth of small islands, channels, and hidden coves formed by partially submerged sand dunes that create some of the most interesting and productive fishing structure in the state.
Walleye are the premier game fish at Potholes Reservoir, with the open-water main body of the lake producing excellent catches of fish averaging 14 to 20 inches, along with consistent trophy opportunities. Largemouth Bass fishing in the sand dunes area is exceptional, with dense weed growth and countless ambush points holding bass throughout the warmer months. Smallmouth Bass patrol the rocky dam face and riprap shorelines, while Crappie, Bluegill, and Yellow Perch offer outstanding panfish action that draws families from across the region. Rainbow Trout are stocked seasonally and provide additional variety.
Mardon Resort and the state park at the southern end of the reservoir offer well-maintained boat launches and full services for visiting anglers. The sand dunes area on the reservoir's southern end is best explored by smaller boats or kayaks, while the open main body accommodates larger vessels. The reservoir's location in the sunny, arid Columbia Basin ensures warm summers and an extended fishing season, making Potholes one of eastern Washington's most popular and productive year-round fishing destinations.
